At KenCCID, every day brings new opportunities for individuals to learn, connect, and grow. Sometimes those opportunities begin with something as simple as a handful of soil, a few plants, and the excitement of creating something together.
Recently, the residents of our Rising Sun Home spent a wonderful day building and planting new raised garden beds alongside Program Director Joseph Momoh. Individuals Miles and Rebecca eagerly participated in every step of the project—from preparing the garden beds and filling them with fresh soil to planting vegetables and helping clean up afterward.
The gardening project was about much more than growing vegetables. It was about creating meaningful experiences that encourage teamwork, independence, and pride in a job well done.
Throughout the afternoon, Miles and Rebecca worked side-by-side with Joseph, learning how to prepare the beds, carefully place each plant, and create a space that will continue to flourish throughout the growing season. Their smiles and enthusiasm reflected the joy that comes from being actively involved in something meaningful.
Gardening offers countless benefits for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It encourages physical activity, teaches responsibility, develops problem-solving skills, and provides a calming connection with nature. Watching plants grow over time also reinforces patience, consistency, and the satisfaction of seeing hard work produce results.
The new raised beds are already home to a variety of vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, squash, and other seasonal plants that everyone will help care for in the weeks ahead. As the garden grows, so will the confidence and skills of the individuals who planted it.
One of the highlights of the day came after the planting was complete, when everyone worked together to clean up the empty soil bags and organize the gardening supplies. It was another reminder that every part of the project—from preparation to cleanup—provided opportunities to learn, contribute, and work as a team.
Projects like the Rising Sun Garden reflect KenCCID’s commitment to creating enriching, hands-on experiences that promote independence, community participation, and personal achievement. Every seed planted represents more than future vegetables—it represents confidence, responsibility, friendship, and growth.
We are incredibly proud of Miles, Rebecca, Joseph Momoh, and everyone who helped make this project a success. We look forward to watching the garden flourish and celebrating the harvest together in the months ahead.
At KenCCID, we’re growing more than a garden—we’re growing confidence, independence, and brighter futures, one plant at a time.
