The Gift of An Ordinary Life

The gift of an ordinary life

The “Normal” Routine

When you woke up this morning, did you stop to think about exactly how you were going to get ready?

Did you think of how much work it would take to get from your bed to your bathroom?

Did you wonder if your place of work had accessible parking?

These are some of the questions that face individuals with disabilities on daily basis. Sadly, at the root of these questions is not limitations, but accessibility.

Accessibility

We’ve heard it said that a rising tide raises all ships. Similarly, for individuals with disabilities, enhancements in what some may consider small accommodations, can make a world of difference.

Think back to the last time you wished you could park closer to a store entrance after suffering a temporary injury.

Think back to just a few years ago when getting around was near impossible due to pandemic-related lockdown restrictions. Didn’t you just love being able to have groceries delivered to your front door?

For individuals with disabilities, feeling “locked out” of society is a struggle they face every day.

While that sprained ankle or lockdown restrictions may have eased for you, for individuals with disabilities, that’s their daily reality. With small changes to the levels of access and care, the daily reality for individuals with disabilities can be greatly improved.

An Ordinary Life

One of the goals of KenCCID is to ensure that individuals with disabilities live a life full of choices that’s not different from that of any other. Essentially, an ordinary life.

Just think about that for a second. An ordinary life is what certain members of our society strive for. Not something fantastic out of a fairy tale. Not a trip to an exotic location. Just a life that is … ordinary

During this Holiday Season, as we reconnect and exchange gifts with family and friends, let’s not forget how this seemingly ordinary tradition is just a dream for some.

At KenCCID we support individuals with disabilities in three main ways:

  1. Housing accommodations
  2. Physical care
  3. Job supports

Just ordinary things, really.

Making a gift to KenCCID ensures that we can continue to provide extraordinary service to individuals with disabilities.

Consider adding KenCCID to your list of charities this year when making donations.

With just $5 you can give an individual with a disability the opportunity to visit a coffee shop and engage with their local community.

$25 takes them to a museum to deepen their appreciation of the arts.

For $50, they get to cheer on our very own Phillies!
