Mary

Mary became a resident of KenCCID in 2001. She was born 3 months premature but didn’t allow that to stop her. She is very friendly and enjoys activities outside of the home. Employment has broadened her horizons in many areas.

Mary is bright, intelligent and easygoing. Having a speech impediment has not left her hesitant to communicate her wants or needs. With the support of the KenCCID staff and other outside entities, Mary demonstrates all traits of a self-advocate.

KenCCID enrolled Mary in Community College’s program for individuals with special needs. She increased her learning on the Basics of Computers, Work Ethics and Life Skills. After learning how to make flyers with Community College and Job Coaches; we could not stop her in action. Every two weeks she wanted to make flyers or certificates for our individual’s monthly board meetings.

With support of KenCCID and the Northeast Community Center, Mary started her own candy business known as “Mary’s Chocolate Factory”. Mary really liked the project phrase ‘Melting Disabilities to Mold Possibilities’, which meant that we should focus on everyone’s abilities opposed to what is considered your disability. Mary has truly excelled and is thankful to the support that KenCCID has afforded her.
