Boo!

“It was and still is within our lifetimes that places like Pennhurst are seen as Halloween attractions and not places we sent human beings to live for decades away from their families to face abuse, neglect and a life of isolation.”

These were the powerful words from Executive Director for the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and Keynote Speaker, Amy Nieves, MHR, during the 31st Annual Brighter Future Awards hosted by the City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIDS) in June 2023.

As we enter the #fall and #halloween season, let us not forget  the true history behind places that have been “re-branded” as “attractions”.

The pain and horror of countless numbers of individuals was the fire behind our founder’s vision to create a safe and nurturing place for individuals with disabilities.
