Power in Numbers
For Pride Month, as we wave rainbow flags to celebrate the progress hard fought and won by the LGBTQIA+ community, we also pause to remember those that also share another identity – having a disability. It’s a unique intersectionality that many members of the LGBTQIA+ community share.
In a study analyzed by the Human Rights Campaign, they found that LBTQIA+ individuals self-reported having a disability at a rate higher than the non-LGBTQIA+ population. The study showed that over one third of LGBTQIA+ individuals reported having a disability. The disabilities reported fell into the following categories:
- Cognitive
- Hearing
- Independent Living
- Mobility
- Self-care
- Vision
The challenges of having any one of these disabilities, combined with being LGBTQIA+ is compounded.
As startling as these numbers are, the challenge to the wider community is even greater. Studies have already shown how individuals with disabilities fare worse than the general population when it comes to job security, basic housing needs, and access to basic medical care. The needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals with disabilities must be addressed.
51 Years and Counting
At KenCCID, we’ve heeded that call for 51 years and counting. Our homes provide a safe space for anyone with a disability, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. A core tenet of how we provide services is through a personalized assessment and strategy for each individual.
All of our homes have an assigned vehicle to help transport residents to and from community building events and medical appointments. In each home, we have well-trained and caring professionals caring for our residents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
One size does not fit all at KenCCID. We offer a variety of living arrangements from apartments to small homes. Our options include 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom homes and apartments. Most residents have 1-2 roommates living in a family setting who share their living spaces with separate bedrooms.
Other residents prefer to use our semi-independent living arrangement.
Individuals residing at KenCCID community homes are well cared for and experience freedom of choice, safety, friendship, respect, home cooked meals, and a sense of pride.
KenCCID offers a range of service options to promote independence that directly enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Our services include:
– Home security systems directly linked to local police and fire departments.
– A Nursing Department to meet basic medical needs on a daily basis.
– 24-hour on-call coverage for emergencies.
– A Maintenance Department which responds to repair and upgrade assignments in an efficient and timely manner.
At KenCCID, we are invested in the success of each of our residents so that they can live a life of dignity and choice, and are empowered to reach their full potential.
