Push to Open

Push to open accessibility button

How many of us have used the Push to Open button to open doors at public buildings … with your hands full???

Wasn’t that convenient for you?

Well, there’s actually quite a bit of history behind this “convenient” button.

Opening doors to individuals with disabilities became legally enforceable only 30 years ago.

The American Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990.

30+ years.

That’s not really a long time all things considered.

Per the ADA National Network:

“Businesses or buildings that are open or offer services to the general public are called “places of public accommodation” by the ADA.

Places of public accommodation and buildings constructed by state or local governments must be fully accessible to people with disabilities if built after January 26, 1992.”

So the next time you think of the “convenience” of that little button, think of the fight it took for individuals with disabilities to finally be recognized and supported to just simply …

Open the door.

For us here at KenCCID, our doors stay open when it comes to individuals with disabilities.

Our mission at KenCCID is to promote dignity and choice to empower Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to reach their full potential.
