Lindsay enjoys the freedom and independence of choosing what she wants to cook and eat. Having the autonomy to make these everyday decisions allows her to express her personal preferences, build confidence, and take ownership of her daily routine.
Through opportunities like cooking, Lindsay is empowered to plan meals that she enjoys, select ingredients, and actively participate in every step of the cooking process. Whether she is trying a new recipe or preparing one of her favorite meals, each experience strengthens her decision-making skills, encourages creativity, and promotes greater independence.
Cooking has become more than just preparing food—it is a meaningful activity that supports Lindsay’s self-determination and quality of life. By making choices that reflect her own tastes and interests, she continues to develop valuable life skills while enjoying the satisfaction and pride that come from creating meals she loves.
At KenCCID, we believe that every individual deserves the opportunity to make choices that matter. Supporting Lindsay’s autonomy in the kitchen is one example of how person-centered services empower individuals to live with dignity, independence, and confidence while pursuing the life they choose.
Sara has always enjoyed the comfort of a warm bowl of homemade soup, and today she is proudly preparing one of her favorite recipes. What makes this moment especially meaningful is the journey that brought her here.
Through the generous support of the IDS Grant, Sara was given the opportunity to participate in cooking classes at a local cooking place. These classes became much more than a place to learn recipes—they provided an environment where she developed valuable life skills, gained confidence, and built meaningful relationships with others.
During each session, Sara learned how to safely prepare meals, measure ingredients, follow recipes, and work collaboratively as part of a team. She discovered the importance of communication, patience, and supporting one another while working toward a shared goal. With every class, her confidence in the kitchen continued to grow.
Today, as Sara carefully prepares her favorite soup, she is putting those new skills into practice. Her smile and sense of accomplishment reflect not only her love of cooking but also the independence and confidence she has gained through this experience.
The IDS Grant has opened doors for Sara to learn, connect with others, and develop skills that enrich her daily life. Her story is a wonderful example of how meaningful community experiences can empower individuals to discover their abilities, build confidence, and achieve greater independence.
